Background Story

Freshgreen is based near Exeter in Devon and was established in 2006 by Dr. Gill Melling to create unique, sensitively developed gardens. Gill is concerned to promote sustainability in her designs and to shift people’s focus towards wildlife as well as using reclaimed and recycled materials alongside traditional concepts of beauty in a garden.

Having originally studied sculpture at Norwich School of Art and with a PhD in Fine Art, Gill combines three dimensional skills with her expertise as a creative project facilitator and her love of gardens, plants and landscapes. She has spent a a large part of her career working as a creative project facilitator with young people in school and neighbourhood settings, with older people living with dementia, and with local neighbourhoods. Through this work she has learnt to listen carefully to people's individual wishes, to take the time to find out about her clients, and to draw out their own creative ideas and personal requirements.
